About Eating, Working out, & Feeling Anxious

I began to be interested in writing a book on eating disorders a couple of years ago. My close friend, who had been anorexic for years, was finally declared well again by her doctors. We decided to write a book together, describing her years of anorexia – she'd write from the point of view of a person with the illness, I'd write from the perspective of someone who was close to that person.

For various reasons, our joint plans came to nothing, and I decided to complete the project myself. Initially, it was only meant to be a book about anorexia, but the more I wrote the more I realized how the different eating disorders of ten overlap, and so I decided to investigate the full spectrum of illnesses. At that point my plan was to divide the book into chapters, one for each disorder, but that also turned out to be unrealistic. In this book, the reader follows different individuals, each with her own experience of some aspect of the problem complex. The writers share their memories of how their illnesses began, and their struggles to get back to wellness.
